BT Chairman's Awards 2009

 

The BT Chairman's Awards winners with Sir Michael Rake On Thursday 2 July Sir Michael Rake presented the annual BT Chairman’s Awards at a prestigious ceremony at the BT Tower in London. Four Category Winners, eight Highly Commended and two Emerging Impact winners were named at the ceremony, taking home a total of £23,000 between them.

The 2009 winners are:

OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Winner: Ken Evans, Neath and District Talking Magazine for the Blind

COMMUNITY AND CULTURE
Winner: Ken Evans, Neath and District Talking Magazine for the Blind
Highly Commended: Darrell Lawton, 8th Wigan Boys’ Brigade
Highly Commended: Leslie Martin, Tamworth Special Constabulary

EDUCATION, DEVELOPMENT AND AWARENESS
Winner: Edward Cole, Sierra Leonean Adventists Abroad
Highly Commended: Tanya Butler, Stanwell Woodcraft Folk
Highly Commended: Victor Tallowin, T.E.E.C.H.

SPORT
Winner: Tim Harpin, Milton Keynes Sailability
Highly Commended: Robert Ormiston, Currie RFC Colts
Highly Commended: Peter Johnson, Stoke UTA Taekwondo Clubs

YOUTH
Winner: Ivor McClure, Kidz R Us
Highly Commended: Richard Taylor, 1st Crockenhill Scout Group
Highly Commended: Andy Jennings, Bridgwater Sea Cadets

EMERGING IMPACT
Winner: Bernie Allen, Mid-Life Crisis
Winner: Ana Ramos, Balcania

The BT Chairman’s Awards recognise the exceptional commitment to volunteering by BT people. Each winner was personally chosen by the chairman himself, from a shortlist selected from over 150 applications by a panel of judges. In total all entrants for the awards gave an incredible 1,561 hours of volunteering time per month, equating to nearly 20,000 hours a year.

Ken Evans of BT Wholesale in Neath was this year’s Outstanding Achievement Award winner. Ken has been working at Neath and District Talking Magazine for the Blind for 24 years and researches, prepares, edits and records local news to over 300 listeners in the area, ageing from 16-90 years old. As the overall winner, Ken was astonished to receive the £5,000 award for his group and in his speech he recognised all of the nominees as winners too.
