In 2008/09 BT Community Champions award winners gave a total of 27.6 years of volunteering in just twelve months.
2006 BT Chairman's Award Winners
2006's crop of BT community supermen gained some richly deserved recognition at the BT Chairman’s Awards ceremony. A total of 18 BT employees and their guests travelled to the BT Tower in London from all corners of the UK.
Winning groups were selected in four categories - Community, Sport, Training & Development and Youth - along with eight runners up across all categories and an additional six highly commended entries.
BT chairman Sir Christopher Bland personally selected each of the category winners and one of the four category winners to receive the ultimate accolade: the Outstanding Achievement Award. 2006's big winner was Dave Wedlake from the Training & Development category.
The category winners were:
Training & Development: Dave Wedlake - Rhoose Lifeguard Club
Dave manages to fit in a schedule-busting 16 hours a month (in the winter) and 36 hours a month (in the summer) to help out at the Rhoose Lifeguard Club - an organisation which provides both a beach safety service and training and competition opportunities for people of all ages in Rhoose and the surrounding area.
Community: Andrew Stroud - Watford Hospitals Broadcasting Service Andrew has volunteered at Watford Hospital Radio - an organisation which provides music and entertainment to the patients of Watford General Hospital - for more than half of the 50 years it has been on the air.
Sport: Damien McConville - Lamh Dhearg GAC Damien has been involved with this Gaelic football and hurling club for the past 23 years. The organisation offers Belfast boys and girls of all backgrounds and ages the chance to come together to enjoy sport in a safe environment.
Youth: Ian Robinson - 1260 Squadron Air Training Corps Ian’s 1260 Squadron Air Training Corps gives Newark’s youngsters a chance to experience adventure, leadership and learning - whilst teaching RAF principles such as discipline and teamwork.
