BT gives boost to South African community church

2010

Two women look as a baby rests in the grounds of the Greyville ChurchAndy Chesterman, a contract accountant in BT Global Services, has been volunteering with the church for two years and spends on average about five to ten hours a month helping out.

Andy took up the story, "I previously went once a month and played guitar to the local people who attended and also helped with fund raising activities but more recently I have assisted more in ad hoc projects such as organising a ‘Carols by Candlelight' evening for the "I Care" Street Kids project. I also recently co-ordinated a Christmas party for an impoverished pre-school in central Durban called Makabongwe where we provided food, entertainment and presents to 80 children at the school."

The Greyville Church is an important part of the local community and some of the services they provide include daily prayer, devotion and feeding programs for 100 people a day, food  and clothing distribution to the homeless and other shelters, HIV/AIDS clinic,  transportation to hospitals and visits, skills training, regular street outreaches to the underprivileged and spiritual enlightenment.

Andy concluded, "The donation of £100 and any further donations will be of benefit to the church. How we spend the money will depend entirely on the most pressing need at the time but rest assured the money will be of real value to the church and the local community.

"I would like to thank the BT Community Champions scheme for the donation and I am impressed with the fact that it has helped me out in South Africa. This shows that the company is truly global and not just focused on the UK."
