2010

A boy reads one of the new books bought for the school library thanks to BT Community ChampionsChen Yue, a Sales Director from Global Services in China has received a BT Community Champions Award for his work with the Mei Hua Cun primary school in South West China.

Chen put in for the award to help the children in this poor area of China through the purchase of books and ICT technology for their library.

He explained, "We identified the Mei Hua Cun primary school in Yong Ping County, Yun Nan province in Southwest China and we intend to keep a focus on this school. We also are planning to get a volunteer to travel to that school from Shanghai to deliver some classes to the children there."

Chen continued, "Our office in China has already refreshed the school's library with 100 brand new books and 50 second hand books. The books in the school library had not been refreshed for the past two years. The books we selected are based on recommendations from teachers in the famous primary school in Shanghai so that they were suitable for the kids in the Mei Hua Cun School."

Chen is the leader of the group and has been involved with the project for a year, Chen spends two hours a month working with the school.

"I keep in contact with the school and the local educational authority in Yong Ping, Yunnan. This gives me an understanding of what they need and also allows me to think about what we can do to support the school in a cost-effective and efficient way. We also write letters to the children to encourage them to learn and study hard.

The new books allow the children in rural schools to access the same information as the children in larger cities such as Shanghai.

Chen concluded, "I was delighted with the BT Community Champions award as it allows us to carry on the good work we have already started with the school. We intend to spend the money on the school library with items such as magazines, and also provide multimedia contents such as CDs and tapes to support the learning."
